listen. aging into your thirties rocks. yes your joints get a little creaky. yes you can’t sleep in a pretzel on the floor anymore after a concert or a convention. and you lose some friends. but the thing is that you sort out who your real friends are and you sort out who you really are. and you get to see your friends settling into careers they like, and adopt new dogs and cats, and you find a job you can stand, and get really good at arts and crafts, and maybe that book you loved as a kid gets a movie deal and it doesn’t suck, and you learn to like new food and bake your own bread, and you realize that the great portfolio of self harm scars you all used to curate are going white with age and not updated, and half your friends are a different gender now and so much happier and maybe you are too, and you know who you are, and that it’s a journey and not a revelation. it’s a direction you’re headed, and you’re enjoying the trip.

i know you said that it’s better to write your own spells and its definitely something i want to start doing but idk how
hiswitchcraft answered:
I don’t think it’s better like that it makes me or anyone else superior I just think it’s really interesting and has a lot of benefits. I think all witches that have spell work as a consistent part of their practice and are interested in it should advance to that point eventually. You certainly sound interested in it, so here’s how I’d suggest doing it! Please keep in mind this guide is just based on how I do spell work and how I progressed to doing my own spells.
How to Write Your Own Spells
I’m sure to many spell writing sounds really intimidating even if you’re interested in it. But fear not, it’s something I suggest you ease yourself into it.
Substitutions
The first step to this is substitutions. Substituting ingredients in a spell will teach you what you like, what about a spell is really important and necessary for you. it will teach you about ingredient selection and correspondences. And last but not least, it will teach you about experimentation. You’ll learn what works and what doesn’t. These things are essential for spell writing.
After a while of doing this you’ll learn what you like and what works and instead of doing substitutions out of necessity due to lack of ingredients you’ll do it out of preference. A different method or ingredient will work better for you based off of knowing yourself and the results you got from that experimentation.
“I don’t really like using candles, I’ll put the herbs in a jar instead”
Or
“This ingredient worked really well in this context for me last time”
Something like this can easily become commonplace when working out a spell. This means you’re entering the next phase I experienced.
Advancing, experimenting, & knowing thyself
When you get to this point, it’s a wonderful sign. Experimentation and knowing yourself are things I really suggest new witches go for and you’re getting there.
Once you’re to this point, it’s not that hard to ease yourself from picking a different method or substituting an ingredient here or there to composing your own spells. Even if they’re really simple. Instead of picking a new method because you don’t like the one a spell is using and substituting one or two ingredients, you’ll pick a method you prefer and pick out 5 or 6 maybe.
When you’re ready to go from dipping your legs in to easing yourself into the pool, here are some things to consider for any spell you write, simple or not.
Intent
Why are you doing this spell? How much do you want it? What do you really want to gain from it when all is said and done? Consider your intentions deeply. I suggest you be as specific as possible too. This makes it more likely you’ll get what you want, and avoid backfire. Here are some examples of what I mean.
If your intent is just “I want a job” you might get handed any old job that’s available in your town. But if your intent is “I want a barista job” or “I want a job with _____ hours” or “I want a job with _____ benefits” you’re more likely to get what you want.
I’ve also had experiences where I wasn’t specific enough about the time frame that my spell would work and so the spell stopped working earlier than I needed it to and it was really annoying.
Being specific could benefit you so much for many reasons. I have my own beliefs on why this is, but it’s something I see people of many different beliefs on the functionality of spell work suggest so specificity is something to consider at the very least.
Many people also like to avoid directly manipulating others in their spells. This can be a component to consider too. Instead of the intent “I want ____ to talk to me” you might try “I would like to encourage communication between me and ____” See the difference? This is another example of considering your intent and being specific being so important.
One way that I personally like to avoid issues like all of the above is with petitions. The word petition is used in a few different ways depending on the context. In the case of my spell work when I say petition I mean a letter that describes how, when, and under what conditions a spell will work. Even if this letter isn’t a physical component in the spell just typing it out makes it much clearer in my mind for when I’m doing spell casting. Usually though, I include a physical petition. It works out all the kinks.
Timing
The position of the planets, moon phase, month, day, and hour you do your spells can be components in them. That probably sounds overwhelming. You don’t have to plan a spell ahead of time or track all these things to pick the perfect day of the year. It’s just something of note to consider.
Method
Is there any particular method you prefer? Or that would suit this spell the best? Remember that methods and physical actions have symbolism and arguably correspondences of their own. Some examples! Burying something in your front yard brings it to you. Tying something up in twine binds it. What methods do you prefer and how can symbolism play into this spell?
Tools & Ingredients
What will this spell need and how will it function? What tools will you need? Will they need to be cleansed? How about ingredients? Do you need to shop or forage for anything before you do this spell? A little overwhelming, but I like to be thorough.
Steps
When you actually do the physical parts of the spell, what will that look like? What order makes the most sense? Are you going to need to cleanse before? Think it all through and work out any issues. Write it down if you need to!
Reminders
Be sure to cleanse and charge anything that needs it before you do a spell, especially the space. You’re going to want to have some kind of protection up, which should be layers of wards but that’s another post entirely. Do you cast circles in your practice? Will you cast one before? Grounding yourself before a working can also really help you focus your intent and keep from getting exhausted. If you need to write this all down to remember to do it before, do that! That’s what I do. Step by step includes preparation.
Tip
Do you really, really wanna get good at this spell writing thing? Then write it down. Write all of the above down, what kind of spell it is, the intent, why you’re doing it, the date, methods, ingredients, steps, how you felt after, the results. Go absolutely nuts and reference these notes often. Back to experimenting and knowing thyself. Because of this reflecting, your experimentation will be worth while because you’ll learn what works. You’ll also learn what you like!
I hope this answers your question, haha!
